My Rating: 2 Stars.

I was looking forward to reading World War Z by Max Brooks because the ovewhelming majority of the ratings and reviews on Amazon were positive. Unfortunately I do not agree with the majority on this one. In fact I’m bewildered by the positive reception World War Z has received.

My main compliant with this ebook is the narrative structure Max Brooks uses. It is presumably based on the investigative report of the narrator who interviews a series of survivors in an effort to recreate the incidents that led to the Zombie War and how the survivors managed to survive. This structure makes it difficult for me to form an emotional bond with the characters. To me it is kind of like reading an anthology of short zombie stories.

So although I did enjoy the World War Z it was not addictive and I didn’t experience feelings of loss or bereavement when I finished it. I’m only giving it two stars because, although it was very readable, I wouldn’t recommend it to a friend.

NOTE: I read World War Z on my Android phone using the Kobo application. It was not a very good ereader app because it wouldn’t bookmark the last page when I closed the app. So every time I started up the Kobo app I had to scroll through to where I had left off. That’s fine when your at the very beginning or the very end, but in the middle it’s a huge hassle. And whenever I answered the phone, or if I wanted to take a break and check email or voice mail, I was forced to close the app. Maybe they have fixed this in Kobo by now, but it’s too late for me because I’m reading almost everything with the free Android Kindle app on my T-Mobile MyTouch 3G.

Tooth And Nail [Kindle Edition]

My Rating: 3 Stars

Tooth and Nail by Craig DiLouie is a solid zombie e-book. It took a while to get going but once it did I was hooked. I can’t say that I loved it, but I liked it and would definitely recommend it.

The Tooth and Nail zombie e-book is about a bioengineered rabies virus that scientists unwittingly unleash on the human population. The innocuous virus quickly mutates into a new super-aggressive “mad dog” strain that attacks the human brain creating a zombie host obsessed with infecting new victims. Mad dog infection is spread by saliva.

I like the way “sleeping” zombies seem to dream about their past lives which causes some of them to wimper and scream out in emotional pain. Unfortunately, these zombies, which are hosting the mad dog virus only have a life-span of about 5 days. And they can be killed like normal human beings—the brain does not have to be destroyed.

All in all I found the Tooth and Nail plot to be plausible (despite a few logical contradictions), which made it a bit more creepy than the average zombie theory which is based on superstition or relies on suspension of disbelief. My bottom line analysis is that Tooth and Nail is an enjoyable e-read.

The Stand (Kindle Edition)

By (author) Stephen King

My Rating: 4 Stars

The Stand by Stephen King was probably the first apocalyptic novel I read. It was an incredible read that I enjoyed while working on a commercial fishing vessel out of Santa Barbara, CA. It was a great way to fill the lonely nights spent at sea. I still remember the Lincoln Tunnel scene as clearly as if I had read it last week. Stephen King is one of my all time favorite writers. Although The Stand is not a zombie novel it is arguably one of the greatest apocalyptic survival epics ever published.

Note: I read this book on paper but it is now available for the Kindle

My Rating: 3 Stars

LZR-1143: Infection, by Bryan James, is an enjoyable zombie ebook. I liked the story and the characters. It doesn’t rate more than three stars because it is somewhat short and shallow, but I thought the main character, a criminally insane action movie star, was very funny and his leading lady was also a riot. I would recommend LZR-1143: Infection and I would also buy the sequel.

My Rating = 3 Stars

I enjoyed reading After Life by Jaron Lee Knuth. It is well written and entertaining, but rather short. I enjoyed the classic character arcs as the main characters had to change in order to survive the zombie outbreak. Normally I criticize zombie ebooks for undeveloped characters, so it’s strange that my biggest criticism of After Life is that too much time was spent on character development and not enough on plot and action. I would have like to see more zombie battles and zombie attack scenarios. I read After Life on my wonderful Android phone with Amazon’s very well designed Android Kindle App.

As The World Dies: The First Days (book 1 of 3)

Rating: 4.0/5 (1 vote cast)

My Rating: 4 Stars

I really like all three of the As The World Dies books in Rhiannon Frater’s zombie trilogy. I purchased them from SmashWords.com and read them on my free Aldiko ereader Android app. Each of the books in this trilogy has a well developed story, and characters that I felt strongly about one way or the other.

There are only two negatives for me: she spends way too much time developing the sexual orientation of the two female lead protagonists, and there are too many typos, which occasionally distracted me out of the story and gives it a self-published feel (which it is, but still).

I strongly recommend the As The World Dies trilogy. It looks like only the last two books in this zombie trilogy are available on the Kindle. I guess if you’re tech-savvy you could download the first book from smashwords and then import it into a Kindle (but I don’t know how to do that). Or you could go old school and purchase it as a paperback from Amazon.

Here’s the SmashWords.com links to all three books in the As The World Dies trilogy:

And here’s a link to Rhiannon Frater’s website. She seems pretty cool.

After the End [Kindle Edition]

My Rating: 3 Stars

After the End by Bonnie Dee is a solid zombie e book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading zombie books. My review standards are pretty tough so don’t be discouraged by three stars. For perspective, I’ve never given a five star review.

After the End is the story of a group of men, women and children who are riding on a subway car and suddenly find themselves fleeing from zombies. The group must bond together and overcome their personality conflicts and inner demons to survive. I enjoyed the story and the characters, including the zombies, even though the zombies were more difficult to kill than traditional “shamblers.” The zombies in After the End wouldn’t stop until their brain stems were severed.

Like a lot of the zombie ebooks, After the End could use a copy editor and tighter proofreading, but the problems were not severe enough to ruin the reading experience. I’m looking forward to Bonnie Dee’s zombie sequel.

I really should not rate this book because I found it so boring that I had a hard time reading through the first chapter. It is apparently doing well in bookstores. But then again so is World War Z, which is also low on my list of favorite zombie books.

Dead City [Kindle Edition]

Rating: 3.5/5 (2 votes cast)

My Rating: 3 Stars

I never thought I would say something like this about a zombie ebook, but Dead City by Joe McKinney has too much action. In fact, there is so much action that it became boring; literary desensitization to zombie violence, I guess.

Please don’t misunderstand, I like, even expect, copious violence in my zombie ebooks, but the pace and quantity of action in Dead City left very little room for story and plot. However, the main characters did have enough page time to develop interesting personalities.

Bottom line is that Dead City by Joe McKinney is a very readable zombie ebook, a good zombie ebook, but it would have been a lot better with less violence and more story.

Dying to Live (Paperback)

By (author) Kim Paffenroth

My Rating: 3 Stars

Dying to Live: A Novel of Life Among the Undead by Kim Paffenroth is a very decent zombie novel and I would recommend it. I’m only giving it three stars because I found it very forgettable. It’s difficult to explain that criticism. I remember the story (now that I’m writing this), I remember the characters and I remember that it was a pleasure to read. But I have no connection to this book. I couldn’t remember the title, the author, or what the cover looked like. And no, I’m not taking any prescription or street drugs (friendly with Bill W. since 12/16/91). I don’t have anything really negative to say about Dying to Live other than it was pleasantly unremarkable.

Note: I read this on paper because it wasn’t available as an ebook.

The New Dead: A Zombie Anthology

The New Dead: A Zombie Anthology (Kindle Edition)

By (author) Christopher Golden

My Rating: 2 Stars

I give The New Dead two stars because it’s readable,  some of the stories are pretty good, but anthologies don’t do it for me. I like epic novels that follow a traditional story structure with well developed characters that I can bond with or root against.

Another complaint I have is that some of the stories in The New Dead: A Zombie Anthology may not technically qualify as zombie stories. All deal with reanimation of the dead, that is true. But can we consider all forms of reanimated humans zombies? For example, the so-called zombies in one of the stories, Storm Door, are demons that possess the bodies of the recently expired, are highly intelligent, capable of speaking and have “long memories.” Doesn’t really sound like the description of a zombie to me. What’s more, they can’t be killed by destroying the brain, apparently. Get my drift here?

Two stars.
